Lido Conchiglie is a seaside resort in the province of Lecce is divided between the municipalities of Sannicola and Gallipoli. It is located on the Ionian coast between Santa Maria al Bagno and Rivabelland lies at the foot of a high Rocky Ridge. The locality, mainly inhabited in summer, has a coastline of approximately 2 km characterized by stretches of high and low cliffs and a wide sandy stretch. Of considerable landscape interest is the rocky ridge of “Montagna Spaccata“, so named because of a passage carved into the rock for the construction of the coast road.
Lido Conchiglie developed in the forties of the twentieth century following the construction of a bathhouse called Lido Conchiglie Beach to the presence of numerous shells. The territory was inhabited since Palaeolithic however as evidenced by finds of fragments of clay, of pottery and human remains. During the Byzantine period the town was settled by Basilian monks, which built around the 10th century the Abbey of San Mauro ’, whose Church is still visible on the ’ Hill ’ Alto Lido.
